The Reaper is a story of lost iconic art and personal heartbreak, particularly poignant in light of the devastating fire in Paris at Catedral de Notre Dame this week.

I was blessed to have spent an afternoon at Notre Dame years ago. It left a lasting impression: the best efforts of man paying homage to his God. One could not be there without feeling the aura of holiness. The heart rends to see such an icon burn. They will rebuild Notre Dame, but they’ll never replicate the history nor recapture its essence.

Congratulations Due:

To Brian Freeman, Duluth-based novelist, for winning the Minnesota Book Award for genre fiction. Brian had been a finalist four previous times, but this time The Voice Inside brought home the bacon.

To the staff of the Catedral de Notre Dame for risking their lives to save irreplaceable objects d’ art from the burning building. I searched the news frantically to see if they saved Michelangelo’s sculpture, Madonna and Child, until I realized that sculpture was hundreds of miles away in the “Notre Dame” in Bruges, Belgium. Duh!
