A Life Lesson for All of Us

Nadine Stair of Louisville, Kentucky, on her 95th birthday, was asked, “What would you do different if you had your life to live over again?”

Without hesitation, this was her answer:

“I’d make more mistakes next time. I’d relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans.

“I would, perhaps, have more actual troubles, but I’d have fewer imaginary ones.

“You see, I’m one of those people who lives sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I’ve had my moments, and if I had to do it over gain, I’d have more of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day. I’ve been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle and a raincoat. I had to do it over again, I would travel lighter than I have.

“If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.”

Thank you, Nadine. Fewer beans, more daisies, for sure.

A Good Time Was Had by All

Last weekend’s “WordPlay”, the first annual Twin Cities literary festival, was a great success. People got to hob nob with the likes of Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Dave Berry and Steven King who were among the 100 authors featured.  Good crowd on Saturday (didn’t make it on Sunday. Mother’s Day takes precedence).

Thanks to The Loft Literary Center for sponsoring the event, and a personal thanks to the Midwest Chapter of Mystery Writers of America for make space available so I could have a presence at the festival as an author, sharing a table with the delightful and engaging Jessie Chandler, author of the Mikala Flynn Art Thief Series.

If you missed it, make sure you get it on your calendar for next year.
